How to Plan the Perfect Summer Weekend from Sarajevo to Jajce and Vlašić

Planning a summer vacation in Bosnia and Herzegovina often begins at Sarajevo International Airport.
While most tourists rush straight to the city center, true connoisseurs of local beauty know that the best summer “reset” lies in the Sarajevo – Vlašić – Jajce triangle. To navigate this route stress-free, the key element is reliable transportation that gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Our advice? Visit both.

First Stop: Sarajevo Airport – Vlašić (distance approx. 112 km)

When you land, it is important not to waste time. The distance from the airport to Babanovac on Vlašić is approximately 113 kilometers. The route takes you through the heart of Bosnia, via Visoko, Kakanj, and Turbet, all the way to the vizier’s town of Travnik.

The drive to Travnik is on the main road and relatively fast, but the real challenge (and pleasure) begins on the ascent to Vlašić. The section from Travnik to Babanovac is about 28 kilometers long. Although the road is paved and very accessible in summer, mountain climbs require a vehicle in impeccable mechanical condition. Our recommendation is to choose more spacious vehicles or family models, especially if you are traveling with family or carrying more luggage.

Second Stop: Trip to Jajce – The Town on Water

Many who stay on Vlašić make the mistake of not moving from the mountain. However, taking one day for a trip to Jajce is something you must not miss. The distance from Vlašić to Jajce is approximately 70 kilometers, and the route through the Vrbas canyon offers some of the most beautiful views in the country.

Jajce is an open-air museum. Seeing the Pliva Waterfall, located in the very center of town, is an experience that tourists from around the world come to witness. With your own rental car, you are not tied to bus schedules or expensive transfers – you can stay for coffee by the Pliva Lakes as long as you wish or climb the old fortress without rushing.
